Tragedy struck Vanderburgh County early Sunday morning when a fire claimed the lives of two young siblings, identified as 14-year-old Jeramya Craig and 10-year-old Paxton Craig. The blaze broke out around 1:45 a.m. on the 600 block of Powell Avenue, where first responders arrived to find the two children unresponsive. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
A third child was initially transported by air to a hospital in Indianapolis. Family members have since indicated via a GoFundMe page that all three children have now passed, though officials have not yet confirmed the third child’s death. Other relatives suggest the child remains on life support.
Deputy Chief of Administration Kim Garrett commended the firefighters’ heroic efforts, stating, “They did everything they could,” highlighting the intense and courageous attempts to rescue the children amid the blaze.
The community has rallied around the grieving family, offering support through donations, prayers, and shared condolences. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help cover funeral costs and provide assistance during this heartbreaking time. Neighbors and residents continue to express sorrow and solidarity, coming together to support a family devastated by this unimaginable loss.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, and further updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
