Tomiyia Jean Smith Dies in Tragic Car Accident

According to Monroe County Coroner Mark Goolsby, Smith was declared dead at roughly 8:30 p.m. after her Volkswagen mini-SUV hit the rear of a flatbed trailer parked on the right shoulder of the interstate close mile marker 188 in Forsyth. Authorities stated Smith's car passed below the 18-wheeler trailer; she was declared dead at the scene.

Smith was flying with her 9-year-old son, who was flown to Egleston Children's Hospital in Atlanta. Authorities said the youngster is still in critical state.

Investigators noted the truck's driver was not at the crash site at the time. Though not hurt, someone was allegedly tending to the parked car when the accident happened.

Authorities confirmed Ohio residency for Smith and her son. Smith was recognized as coming from Mt. Sterling, Ohio, about 30 minutes distant from Columbus. At the accident time, they were passing Georgia.

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation's 511GA system, the collision caused several northbound lanes of I-75 to be closed for about three hours.

Leading the probe with Forsyth Police Department support is the Georgia State Patrol. The probe is yet under progress.

Tomiyia Jean Smith is remembered as a kind mother whose life was tragically cut short. Her death has greatly affected her family and everyone who have heard of this devastating loss. During this tough moment, the neighborhood keeps praying for, caring for, and supporting her loved ones.
