Hidalgo County authorities are investigating a tragic early morning crash that claimed the life of Ascension Lopez, 75, of Mission, Texas.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the fatal accident occurred around 6:16 a.m. on Benson Palm Road, north of San Lucas Street near the Palm View area. DPS troopers reported that a gold Chevrolet Malibu was traveling southbound when it attempted to pass another vehicle.
Preliminary findings indicate that during the passing maneuver, the driver encountered an oncoming northbound vehicle. In an effort to avoid a collision, the driver overcorrected, lost control of the car, and veered off the roadway. The vehicle then rolled into a nearby bar ditch.
Ascension Lopez, who was driving the Malibu, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle survived the crash and was transported to Doctors Hospital at Renaissance for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Officials have not released additional information regarding the passenger’s identity.
The crash prompted a response from DPS troopers and local emergency crews, who secured the scene and began a detailed investigation. Authorities are working to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the incident, including reviewing roadway conditions, vehicle dynamics, and witness statements.
