Gathering in great grief and heavy hearts, we come to remember and commemorate the life of Jeffery Scott, whose life was tragically taken on February 4, 2026, in Troup County. What should have been a regular night turned into misery, with a family grieving, a town shocked, and loved ones desperately looking for answers.
According to the Troup County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched at around 7:49 p.m. to a house at 209 Big Springs Mountville Road following allegations that two adult men had been shot. Deputies discovered both gunshot-wounded victims arriving. Deputy immediately started life-saving operations until the Fire Department and EMS workers arrived and assumed medical care.
Sadly, 54-year-old Jeffery Scott passed away on the site from his injuries. Far too early, his life was taken leaving behind grief words alone cannot describe. Jeffery was a human being with a history, connections, memories, and people who adored him immensely—he was not just a victim of violence. His absence creates an empty space that will be felt for years to come.
The second victim, Walter Keene, 50, was sent to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center where he was treated for his wounds. Our hearts are with him as he works toward recovery, wrestling not only with physical mending but also with the emotional burden of having survived such a terrible occurrence.
Later analysis revealed that 32-year-old Zachary Thompkins, the suspect, came to the scene to confront one of the victims regarding a past argument. A pistol was drawn during that argument, and both guys were shot before the assailant escaped the scene. Later, Tompkins was found at a house on Greenville Road and arrested without event. Charges he now faces include murder, aggravated assault, and having a firearm during the conduct of a crime.
Beyond the specifics of the investigation and the accusations made, there is a more fundamental fact that cannot be ignored: More than life, violence steals peace, security, and a feeling of normalcy. Families are grieving. Friends are left asking “why.” Communities are grieving yet another futile loss.
