ROCHESTER, MN — Authorities have identified Daniel Victor Schandorff, 48, of Stewartville, as the victim of a fatal traffic crash Thursday night near Rochester International Airport.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the collision occurred around 9:45 p.m. on February 5, 2026, when Schandorff was driving a van northbound on Highway 63. Near the intersection with 80th Street Southeast, his vehicle collided with a northbound semi‑truck hauling freight.
Officials reported that Schandorff was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi‑truck driver, identified as Jack Lieffort, 55, of Grand Meadow, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. Investigators confirmed that alcohol was not a factor in the collision.
The State Patrol continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, including speed, road conditions, and visibility. Troopers emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that further details will be released once available.
The tragedy has left the Stewartville community mourning the sudden loss of Schandorff. Friends and family described him as a hardworking man with strong ties to the area. His death has sparked grief among loved ones who are struggling to come to terms with the abrupt end of his life.
Highway safety advocates note that the incident underscores the importance of seat belt use. State Patrol officials have repeatedly emphasized that seat belts are one of the most effective tools for preventing fatalities in crashes. While the exact cause of the collision is still under review, investigators highlighted that Schandorff’s lack of restraint likely contributed to the severity of his injuries.
Residents in Stewartville and Rochester expressed sorrow at the news, with many offering condolences to Schandorff’s family. Community members said the accident serves as a reminder of the risks drivers face on busy highways, particularly near intersections where large trucks and passenger vehicles often converge.
The crash also disrupted traffic in the area Thursday night as crews worked to clear debris and reopen lanes. Motorists were advised to avoid the intersection during the investigation, though normal traffic flow has since resumed.
As the State Patrol continues its work, the focus remains on providing answers to Schandorff’s family and ensuring that lessons are learned from the tragedy. For loved ones, the loss is immeasurable, leaving behind memories of a man whose life was cut short far too soon.
