Authorities verified that Master Trooper Jason R. Vindich, a seasoned member of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol assigned to Troop E, District 5 in Surry County, died Sunday following injuries sustained in an off-duty incident at his home.
When the catastrophe took place, Vindich, 50, was at his house. Although medical staff provided emergency assistance at the scene, he died of his injuries despite all their work. Officials said the incident had nothing to do with the winter storms that struck the area over the weekend.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol stated Vindich's death has significantly affected his family, fellow troopers in Troop E, District 5, and members of the Highway Patrol statewide.
Expressing sympathy and urging help for people impacted by the loss, Colonel Freddy L. Johnson Jr. issued a statement.
“I come to you with a heavy heart as I share the sad news of a current member’s passing,” Johnson said. "This absolutely is a surprise for Master Trooper Vindich's family and friends as well as Troop E, District 5, and the whole Patrol family. During this trying period, pray for all of the Vindich family and members of Troop E, District 5.
Vindich was considered by coworkers as a committed expert and valuable law enforcement community member; he served with the Highway Patrol for many years.
Funeral plans and other specifics about the event were not made public right away.
Born April 5, 1975, Master Trooper Jason R. Vindich passed on on January 25, 2026. For the North Carolina State Highway Patrol as well as the neighborhoods he served, his passing represents a great loss.
