Former NFL Player Kevin Johnson Found Dead in Los Angeles at 55

 LOS ANGELES — Former NFL defensive end Kevin Johnson, who played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Oakland Raiders, has died at the age of 55. Authorities confirmed Johnson was found dead Tuesday near a homeless encampment in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner listed his cause of death as blunt head trauma and stab wounds, and the Sheriff’s Department is investigating the case as a homicide.

Johnson’s passing has shocked both the football community and his loved ones. Family members and childhood friends expressed grief on social media, including his son, who shared heartfelt tributes remembering Johnson’s life and career.

Born and raised in Southern California, Johnson began his college football career at Los Angeles Harbor College before transferring to Texas Southern University. His talent earned him a spot in the 1993 NFL Draft, where the New England Patriots selected him with the 86th overall pick. However, he was released before the season began.

Johnson eventually made his NFL debut with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1995. During his rookie season, he appeared in 11 games, recording six sacks, 19 tackles, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown — a standout performance that showcased his defensive skills. He returned to the Eagles in 1996, adding another sack and 14 tackles across 12 games before being released in December of that year.

Following his time in Philadelphia, Johnson spent a season with the Oakland Raiders before transitioning to the Arena Football League, where he found success with the Orlando Predators. In 1998, he helped lead the team to a championship, cementing his place in the sport’s history beyond the NFL.

Johnson’s death underscores the challenges faced by some former athletes after their playing careers end. While he achieved notable success on the field, his later years were marked by struggles that ultimately ended in tragedy.
