Columbia city and the University of South Carolina community are grieving the terrible death of 18-year-old Eliana M. "Ellie" Peterson of Columbia, whose body was discovered Tuesday at the 650 Lincoln student housing building in the 600 block of Lincoln Street.
Studying at USC, Ellie was a first-year chemistry student from Sumter, South Carolina.According to Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford, she was declared deceased at the scene.The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), under direction of the USC Police Department, is still looking at the circumstances surrounding her death.
Officials at the university have said there is no threat to campus; USC's Student Affairs staff is providing counseling and support to students, staff, and faculty impacted by this catastrophe.
