In a statement made by Bren Palmer, his father, the family requested that all current search activities cease. They said Christopher had only recently been given a terminal illness diagnosis, which helped them to better appreciate the tough choices he may have had to make in the days before to his disappearance.

The family wrote, "Christopher loved the outdoors and prized his independence." “The future he did not want would have taken much of that away.” Those words create an image of a man who held freedom, nature, and independence dear—values that impacted his life and, eventually, his family's belief He decided to face an absolutely real reality.

The family said Christopher's personal possessions were found along the beach, leading them to assume he died in the water. The family said this knowledge has given them some level of calm as they start the long grieving and healing journey even though the loss is still awful and deeply painful.

Along with the many volunteers, first responders, and community members who devoted their time, energy, and hearts to the search, the Palmers showed great appreciation for the United Cajun Navy. The statement read, "It has been deeply humbling to witness so many people care for someone they never met"—a tribute to the strength of community in times of common humanism.

They underlined the need of compassion, understanding, and assistance for those dealing with life-changing diagnoses, and asked that Christopher's memory be treated with respect and care.

Hoping no other family will have to go through a similar loss, the family also encouraged ongoing safety along the coastline as they search for closure.
