Amya Fields and Louis Carbonneau Mourning by the Beaufort County community Amya Fields' loss and Louis Carbonneau's passing in an accident.
The people of Beaufort County are grieving the terrible loss of two lives taken far too soon in a horrible vehicle accident that occurred late on Sunday, January 18, 2026.The victims have been named as 17-year-old Amya Fields of Beaufort and 54-year-old Louis Carbonneau of St. Helena by the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office.Their death has left families, friends, pupils, neighbors, and an entire community fighting with grief, disbelief, and great sadness.
Lives were permanently transformed on that calm Sunday evening at about 10:49 p.m., at the crossroads of Eustis Landing Road and Sea Island Parkway.Devastating results resulted from a head-on collision between a Subaru and a Honda. The Subaru caught fire from the impact, prompting an instant reaction from the Lady's Island–St. Helena Fire District and other first responders.Amya Fields and Louis Carbonneau were declared dead at the scene despite their quick and brave attempts.Under critical condition, a 17-year-old boy also in the Honda was sent to Beaufort Memorial Hospital where he is battling for life among hope, prayers, and unrelenting support.
At barely 17 years of age, Amya Fields embodied tomorrow's possibilities—the laughter of young people, the dreams still developing, and the potential not yet totally achieved. She was at an age when one is meant to explore life, strengthen relationships, develop ambitions, and feel the future is limitless. Her passing is particularly painful; it reminds one of how fragile life is and how profoundly one young soul touches so many hearts. Those who knew Amya recall her vitality, her presence, and the light she brought to the world around her.The tales told, the smiles recalled, and the love that will never fade will all contribute to her memory's legacy.
54-year-old Louis Carbonneau was a St. Helena resident whose life mirrored years of experiences, connections, and events that influenced others. He was someone's friend, someone's family, someone whose route crossed many others across his lifetime. His death leaves a silent void, one deeply felt by people who knew him as well as by a society that now pauses to consider his life and legacy. While words cannot fully express the weight of his loss, his memory will live in the hearts of those who spent time with him, had talks with him, and formed relationships with him.
Emergency teams spent several hours surveying the damage as investigators started the difficult task of figuring out what caused the accident. The response and inquiry shut Sea Island Parkway in both directions; it opened only when crews removed the scene. The reason of the accident is still under investigation; meanwhile, the neighborhood grieves and remembers while waiting answers.
