Logan Moyer Obituary News: Stewartville wrestling coach took his own life after shooting a student-athlete from high school.
A teenage student sustained severe injuries, and a former assistant wrestling coach was deceased following an attempted murder-suicide incident that took place in the parking lot of Stewartville High School early Friday morning, as confirmed by officials in Olmsted County.
Around 5:00 a.m. on Friday, December 12, deputies were sent to the school, situated about 10 miles south of Rochester, Minnesota, after gunfire reports were received, according to Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson. When officers arrived, they discovered two people with gunshot wounds in the parking area.
According to investigators, the gunfire happened as a school bus was getting ready to take about 40 members of the Stewartville High School wrestling team to an upcoming meet. Several student-athletes and coaches had already boarded the bus when the events took place.
“One of the teammates was strolling through the parking lot when others heard the first gunshot,” Sheriff Torgerson stated at a press briefing. “As students attempted to understand what had occurred, they then heard a second shot.”
The hurt individual, a male teenage student-athlete, was located on the ground by the coaching team. He was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he received emergency surgery. Family members later told officials that the student is in critical but stable condition.
In the vicinity, deputies found an adult male suffering from what investigators suspect is a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was declared dead at the scene. Authorities identified the deceased as Logan Moyer, a former assistant wrestling coach for the Stewartville school district.
Sheriff Torgerson confirmed that Moyer had been previously removed from his coaching role, though officials emphasized that the shooting's motive is still under investigation. Officials have requested that the public avoid speculation while investigators aim to clarify the complete series of events and any factors that may have contributed.
“This is an uncommon occurrence for our community and a difficult time for all those involved,” Torgerson stated. “This tragedy has affected far more individuals than just the families directly impacted. The road ahead will be challenging.”
Students were safely reunited with their parents later that Friday morning, and school counselors along with support personnel were made available to assist students, staff, and community members affected by the event.
In correspondence to families, Superintendent Dr. Brian Selfors of Stewartville confirmed that law enforcement determined there was no ongoing danger to students, staff, or the public. The district canceled all planned activities for that day, including the boys’ and girls’ basketball matches against Lourdes, and announced that additional care and support services would be provided over the weekend, continuing when classes resumed.
Minnesota lawmakers also reacted to the tragedy. State Senator Gene Dornink issued a statement conveying condolences and appreciation for first responders.
“It is heartbreaking to hear of yet another shooting,” Dornink remarked. “Our sympathies go out to the young man, his family, and the Stewartville community as they deal with the aftermath of this tragedy. We are sincerely thankful to law enforcement, first responders, teachers, coaches, classmates, and medical staff who promptly acted to deliver lifesaving assistance.”
