The Kokomo community is mourning a tragic and heartbreaking incident that claimed the life of 21-year-old Jessica M. Tomlinson on Tuesday evening, February 24, 2026, and left her 1-month-old infant critically injured but stable. According to the Kokomo Police Department, officers responded around 7:04 p.m. to 419 W. Lincoln Road following reports of a gunshot inside the apartment. Emergency responders found Jessica with a gunshot wound to the upper torso and pronounced her deceased at the scene.
Also present were Jessica’s husband, 21-year-old Cameron Tomlinson, and their infant child. Authorities report that the 1-month-old suffered a gunshot wound to the hand, resulting in serious trauma. The baby was initially treated at Community Howard Regional Health Hospital before being transported to Riley Children’s Hospital, where medical staff report the child is now in stable condition.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident may have occurred while Jessica was handling a firearm, possibly leading to an accidental discharge. Police interviewed family members, neighbors, and Cameron Tomlinson while collecting evidence at the scene to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Following the investigation, Cameron Tomlinson was taken into custody and faces preliminary charges of Reckless Homicide (Level 5 Felony) under Indiana Code 35-42-1-5 and Criminal Recklessness (Level 6 Felony) under Indiana Code 35-42-2-2. The case remains active, and authorities continue to examine all aspects of the incident.
Friends, family, and neighbors describe Jessica as a young woman full of promise, whose sudden passing has left a profound void in the Kokomo community. The shock and grief are compounded by concern for the surviving infant, whose road to recovery is now the central focus of the family and medical staff.
