Kentucky State University Tragic Shooting: Shooter on the Loose, Eight Individuals Hurt at KSU Grounds, Active Lockdown in Effect
Several individuals were wounded on Monday afternoon due to a shooting incident at Kentucky State University (KSU), leading to a substantial response from law enforcement and a lockdown across the campus.
According to Frankfort Police, officers arrived around 3:35 p.m. after receiving alerts about an active shooter situation in the southern part of the university, close to Young Hall. Upon their arrival, they found multiple victims and began to secure the area.
Officials confirmed that one suspect has been apprehended. Still, the campus is under lockdown as law enforcement works to clear the buildings, investigate the vicinity, and collaborate with campus safety personnel.
Initial reports suggest that eight individuals sustained injuries, although authorities have not disclosed the severity of the wounds or confirmed if any of those hurt are students.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear addressed the situation shortly after police announced the suspect's detention, stating:
"We are informed of a reported shooting at Kentucky State University in Frankfort. Currently, we know of some injuries. We will provide more details as they become available. Law enforcement is present, and a suspect has been taken into custody. Let us keep those affected in our thoughts.”
Officials at KSU have advised students and faculty to remain sheltered in their locations until further instructions are given and to heed the guidance of campus police.
Multiple law enforcement agencies, such as the Frankfort Police Department and Kentucky State Police, along with additional emergency responders, are active on the scene as the investigation is ongoing.
