The lieutenant governor’s office confirmed his death on Thursday afternoon. He was 88 years of age.


In an official statement, Lt. Gov. Hunt paid tribute to her father’s unwavering commitment to serving the public and the citizens of North Carolina.

A member of the Democratic Party, Jim Hunt held the positions of the 69th and 71st governor of North Carolina, accumulating a total of 16 years in office, thus earning the title of the longest-serving governor in the state's history. Prior to his gubernatorial role, he assumed the position of lieutenant governor in 1972, initiating a lengthy journey in public service.

Current Governor Josh Stein also shared his reflections on Hunt's influence, describing him as both a mentor and a dear friend.
