Footage From Inside Brown University Shows Aftermath of Deadly Classroom Shooting

 Footage from within Brown University

Officials have reported that the tragic shooting incident at Brown University took place inside a first-floor classroom in the Barus and Holley Engineering Building. Investigators suspect that all 11 individuals affected were students. Two people have been declared deceased, while others were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Another victim has been confirmed to have injuries caused by bullet fragments and is anticipated to fully recover.

Providence Police stated that the alleged shooter escaped the building right after the shooting, exiting onto Hope Street before heading towards Waterman Street. Over six hours after the event, the suspect has not yet been apprehended.

Authorities mentioned that there is no interior surveillance footage capturing the shooter within the Barus and Holley building. They have yet to ascertain how the suspect managed to enter the building or where he went after leaving the scene. The police described the suspect as a male, likely in his 30s, wearing black attire. Investigators are examining video footage that might depict the suspect wearing a camouflage-style facial covering, although this detail has not been completely verified.

The occurrence happened just after 4:20 p.m., when Brown University sent out an emergency alert warning about an active shooter near the Barus and Holley Engineering Building. Students, faculty, staff, and residents in the vicinity were advised to stay put, secure doors, mute their phones, and find hiding spots. The alert reiterated the usual emergency protocols: evacuate only if it is safe, hide if evacuation is unfeasible, and take defensive action only as a last measure.

Around 5:27 p.m., the university transmitted a subsequent alert indicating further gunfire had been reported near Governor Street, approximately two blocks from the initial location. Moments later, the Providence Police Department verified that several individuals had been shot in the vicinity of the campus.

At a news conference held in the evening, Providence Deputy Police Chief Tim O’Hara stated that investigators believe a gun was involved in the shooting, but no firearm has been retrieved and the specific type remains unidentified. The police confirmed that there was no direct confrontation between officers and the suspect, who escaped on foot prior to the arrival of law enforcement.

Authorities also responded to reports regarding an unrelated police encounter involving gunfire several blocks away. Officials clarified that although that incident initially suggested a suspect had been apprehended, investigators have not found any confirmed link between that event and the shooting at Brown University.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley affirmed that there are currently no suspects in custody and stressed that officials from Brown University, the Providence Police Department, and the FBI are closely collaborating to find the individual responsible. The Barus and Holley Engineering Building, built in 1965, contains classrooms, laboratories, offices, and lecture halls for the engineering and physics departments and was occupied at the time due to scheduled examinations.

As of the most recent update, the shelter-in-place order is still active. Authorities continue to advise the public to steer clear of the area as the investigation is still ongoing.
