 The Rice University community is grieving the untimely passing of Claire Tracy, a sophomore enrolled at Wiess College, who died yesterday. An email circulated throughout the campus by Bridget Gorman, the dean of undergraduates, verified this sorrowful news and conveyed her sympathies to Claire's family, friends, and fellow students.

Tracy, who hailed from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, was remembered as an intelligent, lively, and profoundly engaged member of the Rice community, leaving an enduring impact on everyone she encountered.

“Claire was a finance student with close friendships and a vibrant personality,” Dean Gorman stated in her communication to the student body. “We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Claire’s family and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her during this difficult time.”

Alongside her studies in finance, Tracy was also pursuing a minor in entrepreneurship, highlighting her quest for knowledge, ambition, and commitment to her growth both personally and professionally. Her academic efforts reflected her pursuit of excellence and her desire to create a significant impact in her chosen career path.

Tracy was actively engaged in the Rice community. She dedicated her time and efforts to groups such as Rice Women in Business, the Social Impact Committee, and the Rice Eclipse Finance Board.

During her first year, she was also part of the university’s soccer team, showcasing her athletic abilities, collaboration, and leadership both in athletics and beyond. Those who collaborated with her recall her as a passionate, determined, and reliable team member who consistently motivated those around her to strive for excellence.

Wiess Magister Flavio Cunha referred to her passing as a “challenging time” for the college, sending an email to the community that included details about support resources available for students. During his annual State of the University address, President Reggie DesRoches honored Tracy’s legacy with a moment of silence, noting, “She had a profound connection with many students and was celebrated for her Rice spirit.”

The university has urged both students and staff to utilize the support services available, such as the Wellbeing Office, the Rice Counseling Center, and the Employee Assistance Program, acknowledging the significant effect her loss has had on the campus environment.
