11-Year-Old Hueytown Boy Dies After Complications from Severe Flu

A heartbreaking story has emerged from Hueytown, Alabama, where 11-year-old Jace Watkins, a fifth-grader at Hueytown Intermediate School, has died after a severe battle with the flu.

Watkins was hospitalized at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham just days before Christmas, after initially appearing healthy. According to family reports, he suffered a sudden seizure and stopped breathing for 15 minutes while en route to the hospital, prompting immediate emergency care.

Despite intensive efforts in the ICU, Jace’s condition worsened due to seizures and respiratory failure, and his brain became swollen, limiting oxygen supply to this vital organ. His family described the rapid deterioration as shocking and devastating.

The local community came together in prayer and support as he fought for his life. A GoFundMe campaign was established to help cover medical expenses, quickly reaching its $5,000 goal.

Family, friends, and the Hueytown community are mourning the loss of a young life taken too soon, emphasizing the dangers of severe influenza, even in children previously considered healthy.
