Her family awaited her there for a warm welcome, with her pajamas neatly arranged on her bed — a tender detail that now stands as a painful reminder of the moments she never reached home.

When Maldonado failed to arrive at the time they expected, her family became anxious and checked the transit tracking application. The bus appeared to be stationary on Rock Springs Road. At almost the same instant, a disaster had occurred. Authorities report that a Ford Mustang, operated by an 18-year-old at a dangerously high speed, crashed into the side of the Access Lynx bus with enough impact to dislodge the vehicle from its axles. The road only bore minor skid marks, leading officials to question if the driver made any attempt to brake prior to the collision.

Maldonado and another passenger — an 81-year-old man who, according to neighbors, depended on Access Lynx for his dialysis sessions — both lost their lives in the incident. The teenager driving the Mustang and a 17-year-old companion were quickly taken to the hospital, where they were reported to be in serious condition as of Tuesday afternoon. Investigators are continuing to examine the velocity, impact, and sequence of moments that resulted in the heartbreaking crash.

For Maldonado's mourning family, her passing is nearly beyond their ability to grasp. “We still can't believe this is happening,” expressed her granddaughter, Edna McGrew. “Yesterday, we visited the nursing home to gather some of her belongings… it’s incredibly difficult.” The family had just enjoyed a wonderful day together, completely unaware that it would be their last time with her.

Maldonado was celebrated as the vibrant spirit of her family — a woman brimming with happiness, humor, and affection, even at the age of 94.
