Obituary of Matthew Juniper: Wellston Police Officer Died in Golf Cart Accident While Off Duty

 PORTSMOUTH, Ohio A young Wellston police officer was killed in a tragic crash early on Saturday morning, leaving the town in mourning.


Matthew Juniper, 25, of Wellston, was confirmed dead by authorities after a car struck the golf cart he was riding in on South Pennsylvania Avenue close to Sixth Street.


Reports state that a 2014 Hyundai driven by an unidentified minor struck the registered golf cart from behind as it was moving along the road. The Hyundai came to a stop in the road, and the golf cart veered off the road and crashed into a tree.


After being taken to a neighboring hospital by emergency personnel, Juniper passed away from his wounds.


The driver of the golf cart, Brant Derrow, 40, of Wellston, was evacuated to a hospital in West Virginia for treatment after suffering severe injuries. The Hyundai's young driver was also sent to a nearby hospital, but it was stated that he only had minor wounds.


Juniper was off duty when the collision occurred, but his coworkers remember him as a devoted officer and well-respected member of the Wellston Police Department. His untimely death has crushed his family, friends, and fellow policemen.


Authorities are still investigating the crash to find out what caused it to happen.
