Obituary and Cause of Death of Former South African Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa In Paris, Nathi Mthethwa commits suicide.

The sudden death of Nkosinathi Emmanuel “Nathi” Mthethwa, South Africa’s ambassador to France, has left the nation in mourning and raised serious questions about what happened before his final moments. Less than a year after being appointed to the French capital post, the 57-year-old ambassador was reported missing on Monday night. His remains were found outside the Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile hotel in the Porte Maillot neighborhood, according to French media by Tuesday.

The people of South Africa, where Mthethwa was a well-known figure in the fields of public service and government, are deeply troubled by this tragedy. His unexpected death, which happened soon after he started his diplomatic mission, has shocked friends, coworkers, and locals.

Mthethwa may have fallen from the 22nd floor of the hotel where he was staying, according to local news outlets. French authorities are currently investigating the specific cause and circumstances of his death, although they have not yet confirmed this information. His disappearance and eventual death are being closely investigated as theories about what happened intensify.

The information was confirmed by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, which also offered condolences to his family and emphasized the need to give investigators time to complete their task. "The Mthethwa family is in our thoughts and prayers during this trying time. His absence is deeply mourned in South Africa and elsewhere, as he honorably represented his country," the government said.

Only after being appointed ambassador in December 2023 did Mthethwa start his term in France. Prior to it, he was well-known for holding important roles inside the government. He formerly held the positions of Minister of Police, where he oversaw major security issues, and Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, where he promoted South Africa's inventiveness and cultural heritage.

His influence extended beyond politics. As a member of the board of the Local Organising Committee, Mthethwa played a crucial role in the 2010 FIFA World Cup victory. On the international front, his contributions in this field are still regarded as one of South Africa's greatest achievements.

Once his death was confirmed, a flood of tributes surfaced. According to Minister Ronald Lamola, it was a setback for the entire international diplomatic community. In addition, the ANC issued a statement recognizing Mthethwa's longstanding commitment to the party and to South African democracy.

Even with all of the tributes, the main attention is still on the unanswered questions about the specifics of his death. South Africans are grappling with the devastating loss of yet another devoted public servant as French investigators continue their inquiries.
