Basketball Queensland mourns the passing, cause of death of Tiana Mangakahia in Syracuse, New York

 Tiana Mangakahia was an exceptional athlete, coach, and mentor whose life and career left a lasting impact on the basketball community around the world. Born and raised in Queensland, Australia, Tiana developed a love for basketball early on and rose through the ranks, playing for Queensland as a junior before earning a spot on the Australian junior national teams. Because of her skill and dedication, she rose to become one of the most well-known athletes in Syracuse University's program's history in New York.


During her tenure at Syracuse, Tiana won multiple awards as the all-time leader in assists and one of the most prolific playmakers in NCAA women's basketball. Her courageous comeback to the court after being diagnosed with breast cancer was the height of her determination and fortitude, inspiring athletes and fans worldwide.


After graduating from college, Tiana kept playing basketball professionally, competing in the WNBL and NBL1 to show off her skills and love for the game. She later transitioned into coaching, sharing her knowledge and passion with the next generation of athletes, despite her second battle with cancer.

Off the court, Tiana was well-known for her fearlessness, positivity, and philanthropy. She valued family, friends, and community, and she made use of her position to support people going through tough times and spread awareness about cancer.


Tiana Mangakahia died after a courageous battle with breast cancer, leaving a legacy of perseverance, excellence, and hope. Her family, teammates, coaches, and fans around the globe are all very saddened by her passing.

In order to continue Tiana's legacy, the basketball community is encouraged to help upcoming players, raise awareness of breast cancer, and play the game with the same passion and love that she always brought to the court.
