Middletown, Connecticut, was left facing a violent and deeply unsettling chain of events Tuesday after a woman was found dead and investigators quickly focused on Barrington Oneil Brown Jr. The 43-year-old Middletown man was later taken into custody after a pursuit crossed into Hartford and ended with an exchange of gunfire involving West Hartford police. By Wednesday, Brown was in court, facing murder and other serious criminal charges.

What Led Police From a Middletown Death

The investigation began around 3:23 p.m. Sept. 29, when Middletown police responded to a residence in the city’s West Lake section for a report of a suspicious death. Officers found a woman who had suffered a gunshot wound and other injuries, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives with the Investigative Services Division identified Brown as a suspect and developed probable cause for his arrest, according to police. Her identity had not been publicly released as of Wednesday.

As the investigation continued, detectives tracked Brown throughout Tuesday evening and alerted neighboring departments about the vehicle associated with the homicide investigation. An automated license plate reader detected the vehicle near New Park Avenue in West Hartford, where officers responded and attempted to make a traffic stop. Police said Brown’s vehicle fled, turning the search into a pursuit that moved through the surrounding region. Officers then deployed tire-deflation devices in an effort to bring the vehicle to a halt.

The pursuit eventually ended near 50 Flatbush Avenue in Hartford, where police said the vehicle came to a stop and gunfire erupted. Authorities said an exchange of gunfire took place between Brown and West Hartford officers after the vehicle came to a stop. Brown and another person were struck and suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening, while no West Hartford officers were injured during the exchange. Brown was taken to a medical facility for treatment before being returned to Middletown police custody.

Wednesday’s court appearance brought the case into a new stage as Brown was arraigned on charges stemming from the Middletown killing. Police charged him with murder, second-degree stalking and unlawful discharge of a firearm. A judge ordered him held on a $3 million bond, with the amount reflecting the circumstances authorities presented to the court and the events that followed the alleged killing that same day. Brown’s next court date was reported as Oct. 13, according to court reporting.

If Brown posts bond, the court imposed additional conditions that include 24-hour GPS monitoring, house arrest and surrender of his passport. The case remains an active criminal proceeding, and the allegations against Brown have not been adjudicated in court. The woman’s death, the circumstances leading to the shooting and the evidence supporting the charges remain publicly important matters for investigators and prosecutors as the legal process moves forward in court.

The police shooting in Hartford is also being investigated separately from the homicide case. The Connecticut Office of the Inspector General responded to the scene and has primary responsibility for examining the officer-involved shooting, while state investigators gathered evidence at the scene. Authorities clarified that the Hartford Police Department was not involved in the shooting itself. That distinction is important as investigators carefully review what happened when Brown and West Hartford officers exchanged gunfire.

For Middletown, the case began with a death that left a woman’s identity unreleased and ended, at least temporarily, with a suspect in custody. Brown’s arrest does not resolve the unanswered questions surrounding the killing, and the separate police shooting investigation will examine the use of force. As both investigations continue, the known facts remain serious and the legal proceedings will determine what can ultimately be established about the events.
