Stephan Coronado was supposed to be preparing for heart surgery, not fighting to remain alive in a hospital bed. The young Texas father had been scheduled for an operation October 1 after months of uncertainty, but a sudden medical crisis changed those plans and left his family facing the possibility of losing him. His loved ones had been looking toward that surgery as a chance to begin treatment and plan for recovery.

Texas Father Stephan Coronado Remains

Just days earlier, Stephan was still going to work and following the treatment plan that had finally come together. His family says doctors discovered a leaking heart valve after he went to an emergency room with chest pain in August, but surgery had to wait until he obtained health insurance and could follow up with his cardiologist. Once the operation was scheduled, there was finally a date and a path forward. The surgery finally offered hope for a forward path.

Then, on Monday, Stephan developed a severe headache while going about his day. He went to work despite the pain, but suffered a stroke while there and was rushed to a hospital. Doctors subsequently discovered an aneurysm and performed emergency brain surgery, removing part of his skull to relieve dangerous pressure inside his head. The procedure marked another sudden turn for his already frightened family. What began as a headache quickly became a life-threatening emergency.

The family says physicians then found a bacterial infection around Stephan’s aortic valve. According to his loved ones, doctors explained that the infection had entered his bloodstream and affected a blood vessel in his brain, creating a dangerous combination of problems involving two vital organs. His heart was already compromised by the leaking valve, while the stroke, aneurysm, surgery, and infection created additional risks that made treatment far more complicated. The infection added another obstacle to an situation.

Now, Stephan’s family says doctors face an agonizing medical dilemma. They have been told that another procedure near his brain is considered too dangerous because his heart may not withstand it, while heart surgery is also considered too risky given his current condition. The operation that was supposed to happen Thursday has instead been replaced by uncertainty over whether his body can survive the interventions doctors might otherwise use to treat him. There was suddenly no path forward.

For his father, Patricio, the situation has become a decision no parent expects to face. The family says doctors have told them they may withdraw Stephan from life-sustaining support Friday, with the warning that his heart might not continue beating once that support is removed. That possibility has left relatives and loved ones trying to absorb the reality that a father who was recently working and preparing for surgery could now be approaching the end of his life.

At the center of the family’s fear is Stephan’s 4-month-old daughter. Her father was supposed to have surgery, but instead she may face losing him before she has had the chance to grow up with him. Mary Alice in San Antonio has reached out on behalf of the family, asking others to pray while Stephan remains alive and his loved ones wait for another change in his condition. For those who love him, every hour now carries weight.

For now, Stephan is still here. They are asking for prayers for his heart and brain, strength for Patricio, and strength for everyone beside his hospital bed. Above all, they are praying for a miracle that could give this young father more time with his baby daughter and give his family a future they were still expecting just days ago.
