Melody Newhouse Dies on Highway 78 in Texas, While Her Sister Remains in Critical Condition
Melody Newhouse, a Farmersville sophomore, died on Highway 78 while her older sister remains critically injured after the collision.
Two years after surviving a devastating collision with a semi truck, Melody Newhouse had continued forward with the promise of a future still taking shape. On Sept. 25, that future was suddenly taken away on Highway 78 in Farmersville, Texas, when another catastrophic crash claimed the life of the high school student and left her older sister, Evelyn, critically injured. Their father, Eric Newhouse, is now facing the unimaginable task of grieving one daughter while praying the other survives.
Melody was a sophomore at Farmersville High School, where she was remembered as a student filled with creativity, curiosity and hope for what came next. She challenged herself through honors courses while exploring interests that reflected a wide-ranging imagination, including engineering and Spanish. Writing and origami were among the things she enjoyed, and she dreamed of eventually starting a YouTube channel, plans that showed how much life she still expected to experience.
The sisters were traveling home from school when the September crash happened, according to their father. The collision left Melody dead and Evelyn in critical condition, with her family now waiting and hoping for signs of recovery. Eric described the loss as devastating, saying one of his daughters had been taken while the other remained in a fight for her life. The circumstances have left a family navigating grief and uncertainty simultaneously.
What makes Melody’s death even more painful is what she had already survived. According to family friend Amanda Lynn, Melody was struck by a semi truck while she was in junior high, also on Highway 78, and endured a long and difficult recovery. She survived that earlier crash and continued building her life, making the second catastrophic collision on the same stretch of highway especially heartbreaking for everyone who knew her.
For people remembering Melody today, those years between the two accidents represent far more than time passing. They were years in which she returned to school, developed her interests and continued imagining what adulthood might bring. Amanda described her as bubbly, kind, smart, funny, silly and talented, while emphasizing how full of hope she remained. The young girl who had once fought through a devastating injury had become a teenager still making plans for the future.
Farmersville ISD has also mourned the loss, remembering Melody for qualities that reached beyond grades and classroom accomplishments. Her creativity and curiosity were part of the student community she belonged to, while her academic work and varied interests reflected someone eager to learn and discover where those interests could lead. For classmates and teachers, her death means the sudden absence of a young person whose future had seemed wide open only days earlier.
For Eric and his family, however, the heartbreak is painfully immediate. They are mourning Melody while Evelyn remains in critical condition, leaving loved ones to move between funeral grief and hospital-room hope. There is no easy way to separate those emotions, especially when the sisters were traveling together and the same crash changed both of their lives. Every update about Evelyn now carries enormous weight for a family already devastated by Melody’s death.
Melody had survived one catastrophic accident and then spent the years afterward living, learning and dreaming about what might come next. Her story now leaves behind memories of a thoughtful, creative teenager whose life held plans that will never be fulfilled, while her family continues praying for Evelyn’s recovery. For Eric, the road ahead means carrying the grief of losing his daughter while holding onto hope for another, with the love of both daughters forever bound together in his family’s story.
