How Did an Argument on Briley Parkway Lead to Austin Franklin’s Death Sunday Morning?
Police say Austin Franklin died at the scene after an argument preceded the Toyota Camry leaving Briley Parkway and reaching I-65.
A routine early-morning drive through Nashville ended in a heartbreaking loss when 24-year-old Austin Franklin died after a Toyota Camry left the roadway near Interstate 65. The crash unfolded around 2 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, as Franklin and a 20-year-old woman were traveling on Briley Parkway near the split with I-65 and Dickerson Pike. Within moments, a moving argument became a fatal collision that left Franklin dead at the scene.
According to the Metro Nashville Police Department’s preliminary investigation, Franklin was the passenger in the Camry while the 20-year-old woman was driving. Police said the two were involved in an argument as they approached the interstate, and the driver told investigators that Franklin grabbed the steering wheel during the dispute. The vehicle then turned to the right, left the roadway and began traveling down an embankment, setting in motion the sequence that ended with the fatal impact. No other vehicle was involved.
From there, the Camry crossed every northbound lane of I-65 before striking a concrete median, according to police. The violent movement of the vehicle transformed an argument inside the car into a crash that emergency responders were called to investigate in the early hours of Sunday morning. Franklin did not survive the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene, while the circumstances described by investigators remain preliminary rather than a final account of responsibility. Police identified no other vehicle.
The driver, a 20-year-old woman, was taken to Skyline Medical Center after the crash. MNPD later reported that she was in stable condition, following an earlier assessment that described her injuries as more serious. Police have not publicly identified her in their release, and officials have not reported additional fatalities from the incident. Her hospitalization added another layer to a case already marked by the sudden death of a young passenger. She remained stable, officials said.
For those who knew Franklin, the official description of the crash cannot capture the person behind the name. He was only 24, an age at which family, friendships, plans and ordinary moments can stretch far into the future, making the abruptness of his death especially difficult for those left behind. No additional personal background was released by police, so the public record remains focused on the circumstances of the collision and the investigation now underway. Police released no further background.
Investigators are continuing to examine what happened before the Camry veered from Briley Parkway and entered the interstate corridor. MNPD has not announced charges related to the crash, and authorities have not said that impairment or another outside factor contributed to the collision. The department’s account remains explicitly preliminary, meaning additional evidence or investigative findings could clarify the sequence before the case is completed. The review remains ongoing.
The crash also disrupted a major Nashville traffic route during the morning investigation, as officers worked at the scene and documented the vehicle’s path. What investigators know so far is precise in its broad outline: an argument occurred, the passenger reportedly took hold of the steering wheel, the Camry left Briley Parkway, crossed I-65 North and struck the median. The details between those points will have to be established through the continuing investigation. Those questions remain unanswered publicly.
Austin Franklin’s death leaves loved ones facing a loss that happened in seconds. While authorities continue working to establish the full circumstances, the confirmed record is already painful: a 24-year-old passenger died at the scene, and the driver survived and was hospitalized. For Franklin’s family and friends, the investigation may eventually answer questions about that morning, but it cannot undo the absence created by his death.
