Long Live Adam: Family Mourns 17-Year-Old Adam James Massman After a Life Filled With Passion

 Adam James Massman was only 17, but the life he lived was already filled with the things he loved most: family, friends, cattle, sports, trucks, competition, adventure, and a future he was quietly building for himself. His passing on August 22, 2026, has left a family grieving the loss of a son and brother whose presence had become woven into every part of their lives.

Born June 17, 2009, Adam was described by his family as strong and spirited, yet naturally quiet. He could sit back with a sly smile and deliver a funny comment, or become animated while telling a story or roughhousing with his brother, Brett. He had a remarkable ability to turn ordinary moments into stories that made people laugh.

Adam worked hard at school and had been looking forward to beginning his senior year. Although his family will not get to celebrate his high school graduation with him, they were already proud of an extraordinary accomplishment: he graduated from CVTC during his junior year through a program completed through Lincoln High School.

Life outside the classroom was just as important to Adam. He loved working with animals, attending cattle shows and fairs, spending time with friends, playing sports, and simply being around people. He played whatever sport was available, from throwing touchdown passes to bowling strikes and running relays. His friendships, especially those he shared with “the boys,” meant a great deal to him.

His relationship with his younger brother, Brett, also grew stronger with time. The two shared interests in cattle, golf, and sports, gradually becoming not only brothers but close friends. They began playing golf together that summer and bought hundreds of golf balls, many of which disappeared into the woods as Adam drove them remarkable distances.

Cattle showing was one of Adam’s greatest passions. His family beef herd became a source of pride, hard work, and purpose. At the 2025 Wisconsin State Fair, Adam proudly showed Kolt to a Bred and Owned Beef Steer victory. His walls filled with banners, ribbons, and belt buckles from fairs and jackpot shows, while his dedication in the show ring earned admiration from the community around him.

Those cattle-showing days brought more than competition. They surrounded Adam with mentors, friends, and supporters who helped him refine his skills and encouraged his ambitions. His family remembers the people who gathered around him, offering advice, making final adjustments, and cheering as he entered the ring. That community became an important part of his world.

Adam also shared a growing vision for the future with his father, Brian. Together they talked about bulls, cows, calves, and plans for Massman Cattle. Adam was helping shape that future, including working on a new family logo. Though he may not have openly explained every plan he had for life after high school, his family believed he knew where he wanted to go.

He was a showman, athlete, truck enthusiast, barber, and someone who enjoyed figuring out how to make things work. His mother remembers the long road trips to watch him compete, from Louisville and Grand Island to countless other destinations, as some of the most meaningful experiences of her life. Their adventures took them from Arkansas and Texas to Phoenix, Yellowstone, the Badlands, Montana, Vermont, the North Shore, and Cancun.

Now, those memories carry a different weight. Adam’s family says their home will never feel the same without him, yet they remain grateful for the 17 years they were blessed to share with their firstborn. He is survived by his parents, Brian and Brianne, his brother Brett, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and a large community that loved him.

A visitation will be held Friday, August 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lincoln High School in Alma Center, Wisconsin, with additional visitation Saturday morning from 9 to 11 a.m. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by burial at East Lawn Cemetery.
