Florida Infant’s Death Becomes Homicide Investigation as Detectives Examine Her Final Hours
A Florida infant died from catastrophic injuries ruled a homicide, with her parents later arrested as investigators examined conflicting accounts.
A seven-week-old baby girl was entrusted to the care of her parents, but her final hours have become the center of a homicide investigation that began with a desperate 911 call. The infant was found unresponsive at her family’s Hollywood, Florida, home in October 2025, beginning a case that authorities would spend months investigating before arrests were made.
On October 14, Gracie Jai Tellez, 20, called 911 and reported that her daughter was cold, pale and unresponsive, according to authorities. Emergency responders performed CPR and rushed the baby to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, where she was placed on life support. Four days later, on October 18, doctors declared the infant brain dead, and she was eventually removed from life support after her organs were donated. The sudden medical crisis left emergency personnel confronting a critically injured child.
What investigators initially heard from the parents later came under scrutiny. Tellez and Robert Lee Ingram Jr., 22, reportedly told investigators that their daughter had been healthy, had been fed a bottle and had been placed in her bassinet for a nap before she was discovered unresponsive. The account became increasingly difficult to reconcile with medical findings that revealed the infant had suffered catastrophic injuries rather than an unexplained medical episode. Their statements became a key part of the investigation.
An autopsy and medical examination documented severe trauma, including blunt-force injuries to the head, brain injuries, bleeding in both eyes, retinal detachments and skull fractures. Investigators said the pattern was consistent with non-accidental head trauma and violent shaking, while the Broward County Medical Examiner determined that complications from blunt head trauma caused the child’s death and classified the manner of death as homicide. The findings transformed the investigation into a case focused on how such injuries occurred.
As detectives reconstructed the baby’s final hours, they also examined the parents’ accounts and digital records. Authorities said the couple claimed they used FaceTime to monitor the sleeping child, but investigators determined that their phones showed activity involving video games and YouTube instead. Records reportedly indicated that the pair were playing Call of Duty during hours when they had said they were monitoring the infant, raising questions about their version of events. That discrepancy became especially significant while investigators continued comparing the records with witness statements.
Nearly ten months after the baby’s death, the investigation produced arrests. U.S. Marshals arrested Tellez and Ingram in Jacksonville on August 7, 2026, after warrants were issued in connection with the case. Both were charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and neglect of a child causing great bodily harm, permanent disability or permanent disfigurement, and authorities said they were being held without bond in separate Broward County jails. The arrests marked the first major public development.
The allegations against the parents remain matters for the courts, but investigators have said they could not identify any reasonable explanation from the couple for the injuries suffered by their daughter. Police also said both suspects denied involvement in, or knowledge of, how the infant sustained the fatal trauma. The case now moves forward through the legal system, where evidence, testimony and medical findings will be examined as prosecutors pursue the allegations. Those allegations have not been proven in court.
For a family, the loss of a seven-week-old child cannot be measured by a case number or court date. The baby’s short life ended after injuries investigators say were preventable, leaving questions about accountability alongside profound grief. As the prosecution develops, the central concern remains the truth surrounding her death and the lasting impact of a tragedy that left a family forever changed.
