Affectionate Photo Turns Tragic Days Before Rylie-Shea Muhlbauer's Fatal Iowa Shooting

 A quiet home in Lake View, Iowa, became the scene of a heartbreaking tragedy that has left a community searching for answers. Just days after an affectionate photograph of a young couple appeared on social media, authorities say the relationship ended in violence, claiming the life of 27-year-old Rylie-Shea Muhlbauer, a chiropractor whose future had only begun to unfold.

According to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, emergency dispatchers received a 911 call at approximately 10:27 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 2, reporting a shooting at a residence on East Shore Drive in Lake View. Police officers and emergency medical personnel responded to the home, where they discovered Muhlbauer deceased. Authorities later identified the victim as the 27-year-old Manning resident.

Investigators allege that Joshua Lehman, 27, of Shenandoah, shot Muhlbauer with a firearm while she was lying in bed inside the residence. Following the investigation, Lehman was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder. Officials say the charge is a Class A felony under Iowa law and carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole if he is convicted.

The case has drawn additional attention because only days before the fatal shooting, Lehman had shared a photograph of himself and Muhlbauer together on social media. The image prompted numerous comments from friends and followers expressing support for the pair. Authorities have not publicly discussed what occurred between the time the photograph was posted and the deadly incident.

Friends and former classmates are remembering Muhlbauer as an accomplished young professional whose dedication to education and athletics shaped much of her life. She graduated from IKM-Manning High School in 2017 before continuing her academic and athletic career at Morningside University, where she played NCAA volleyball for three seasons and helped her senior team achieve 22 victories.

After completing her undergraduate education, Muhlbauer pursued a career in chiropractic medicine. She earned her Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Cleveland University-Kansas City, graduating in December 2023. Those achievements marked the beginning of a promising professional career that was tragically cut short, leaving family, friends, former teammates, and patients mourning her sudden loss.

Lehman is being held without bond at the Sac County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 13. The investigation remains active and is being led by the Lake View Police Department with assistance from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Sac County Sheriff's Office, and the Sac County Attorney's Office. Officials have said no additional details will be released at this time as the case moves through the legal process.
