Marion County Mourns Avante Weldon Following Deadly Likens-Chapel Road Crash Involving Parked Vehicle

 A summer night in Marion Township ended in heartbreak after a tragic collision claimed the life of 16-year-old Avante Weldon, leaving family members, friends, and classmates mourning a young life cut far too short. What began as an ordinary Saturday evening quickly became the scene of a major emergency response as first responders rushed to help multiple victims following a devastating crash on Likens-Chapel Road. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at approximately 10:42 p.m. on July 4 near the intersection of Likens-Chapel Road and Fairground Road in Marion Township. Preliminary findings indicate that a Mercedes-Benz was parked facing northbound along the roadway when it was struck from behind by a Ford Ranger driven by 66-year-old Timothy Best of Marion. The impact created a chaotic scene that required immediate medical assistance for several people.

Investigators said Avante Weldon was standing behind the parked Mercedes-Benz when the pickup truck collided with the vehicle. The force of the impact caused critical injuries to the 16-year-old. Emergency responders from Marion City Fire and EMS quickly transported him to Marion General Hospital, where medical teams worked to save his life. Despite those efforts, Weldon later died from the injuries he sustained in the crash.

Authorities said Sandra Sayre, 46, the owner of the Mercedes-Benz, was inside the vehicle when it was struck. Two 14-year-old passengers were also inside at the time of the collision. All three suffered minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. Timothy Best, the driver of the Ford Ranger, also sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for medical care.

Multiple agencies responded to assist with the investigation and emergency response, including the Marion City Police Department, the Marion County Sheriff's Office, Marion Township EMS, Marion City Fire and EMS, and Kirby's Towing. Investigators remained at the scene for an extended period documenting evidence, examining vehicle damage, and reconstructing the sequence of events to better understand what led to the fatal collision.

At this stage, the Ohio State Highway Patrol has not announced what factors may have contributed to the crash.
