Ja'ymeir Davis, Wynitta Thompson Charged Following Deadly East St. Louis Family Shooting That Left Five Dead

 What began as an ordinary Sunday in East St. Louis ended with one of the region's deadliest family tragedies in recent memory. Five relatives were killed, two others were seriously injured, and two teenagers now face allegations that have stunned the community. The St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office announced that 16-year-old Ja'ymeir Davis has been formally charged as an adult in connection with the shootings. According to prosecutors, Davis faces numerous felony counts, including five counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated battery, one count of dismembering a human body, one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking, and one count of unlawful use of a stolen firearm. Prosecutors have also indicated they intend to seek his continued detention while the criminal case proceeds.

Authorities also identified 15-year-old Wynitta Thompson as a second suspect. Prosecutors said she is currently facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, through a juvenile delinquency petition. The State's Attorney's Office has confirmed it is seeking to transfer her case into adult court, where she could face prosecution under Illinois criminal law if the request is granted. Police responded to incidents near 39th Street and Summit Avenue, the Samuel Gompers Homes in the 400 block of North 6th Street, and Jones Park in the 2500 block of Argonne Drive. Authorities have described the shootings as a targeted attack involving members of the same family. The investigation remains active as detectives continue reviewing evidence and interviewing witnesses.

Officials identified the five people who lost their lives as Patricia A. May, 74, Cherie L. May, 49, Devin D. May, 24, Shania W. Thompson, 25, and Quentin L. Thompson, 21. Two additional relatives survived the attacks but sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized. Their recovery continues as family members mourn those they lost and attempt to cope with an unimaginable series of events that unfolded in a matter of hours.

Law enforcement officials said two teenage suspects were located at Frank Holten State Park following an extensive search. According to authorities, officers used a PIT maneuver to stop a vehicle allegedly driven by one of the suspects before both teenagers were taken into custody without further incident.
