Jackson Community Mourns Brittany Ann Mack After Life Dedicated to Caring for Others

 In Jackson, Mississippi, a hospital community is mourning the loss of a woman who spent much of her life caring for others. Brittany Ann Mack, 35, was remembered not only as an accomplished healthcare professional but as a devoted mother, wife, and friend whose compassion reached far beyond hospital walls. Her passing on July 20 has left loved ones and colleagues reflecting on a life defined by service, faith, and unconditional love.

Brittany’s connection to the University of Mississippi Medical Center began before she even completed nursing school. She started as an extern with Children’s of Mississippi and worked as a student nurse technician while earning her RN and BSN from Mississippi College in 2013. That same year, she officially joined UMMC’s staff and began a career that would eventually touch countless patients, families, and healthcare workers throughout the institution.

Over the years, Brittany took on many important roles within UMMC. She worked as a floor nurse, nurse educator, and nurse manager, helping open two new hospital floors while guiding other nurses through their own careers. Her dedication and leadership earned her recognition as Mississippi Nurse Educator of the Year, an honor that reflected the impact she had on healthcare education and patient care.

In 2023, Brittany stepped into another role she described as a dream job when she became manager of Volunteer Services at UMMC. She focused on rebuilding the volunteer program after the challenges hospitals faced during the pandemic. Through her determination and commitment, she worked to restore a culture of service and connection that had always been important to the medical center and the patients it served.

Although Brittany achieved many professional milestones, those closest to her say her greatest role was being a mother. After leaving UMMC to care for her son, John Hart, full time, she continued showing the same dedication and strength that defined her nursing career. Her ability to care for others was not simply a profession; it was a part of who she was every day.

One moment showed the extraordinary strength Brittany carried as a mother and healthcare professional. When John Hart was six months old and stopped breathing, Brittany was riding in the backseat of the family vehicle while her husband, Myer, was driving. With no time to stop or seek immediate assistance, she used her medical training and performed life-saving care on her own child. Her quick actions helped save John Hart’s life.

Brittany’s journey was also shaped by faith, family, and perseverance. She earned a doctorate in healthcare administration, married Myer Hart Mack on December 11, 2020, and remained active in her church community at Word of Life Church. Friends and family remember her as someone who loved God deeply and extended that same love and kindness to everyone she encountered. Even during more than a year of treatment, she continued caring for those around her and teaching her children the importance of prayer.

Born in Decorah, Iowa, on May 9, 1991, and raised in Brandon, Mississippi, Brittany left behind a legacy that will continue through her family, colleagues, and the many lives she influenced. As UMMC colleagues honored her memory, they shared a message reflecting the impact she made: her nursing duties may have ended, but those who knew her will continue carrying forward the compassion and care she represented.
