After Saving Her Sister’s Children, Cindy Banda Fights for More Time With Her Family
Cindy Banda returns home after surgery as she continues her cancer fight and hopes to stay strong for the six children she raises.
A South Texas mother who has spent years fighting for the children who depend on her is now facing another difficult chapter in her battle against cancer. After undergoing one of the most important surgeries of her journey, Cindy Banda returned home to the people who have given her the strength to keep going — the six children she has dedicated her life to protecting and raising.
Cindy’s story has touched many people because her fight began long before her own diagnosis. After her sister, Melissa Banda, was kidnapped and murdered in South Texas in 2020, Cindy stepped forward without hesitation to raise Melissa’s three children alongside her own. She became the person who made sure those children continued having love, stability, and support despite the devastating loss they had experienced.
Then Cindy received a life-changing diagnosis of her own. Last October, she underwent a mastectomy after doctors discovered she had breast cancer. Later, she learned the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes, creating even more uncertainty for a mother whose greatest fear was not only losing her health but losing the ability to be there for the six children who needed her.
Doctors at MD Anderson became concerned that Cindy’s cancer could continue progressing. Because her breast cancer is fueled by estrogen, physicians recommended a hysterectomy to remove her uterus and ovaries in hopes of reducing the chance of further growth. The procedure represented another major step in Cindy’s fight and another moment where she had to place her trust in her medical team.
Following the surgery, Cindy shared an emotional update from the hospital. Her first words reflected exactly why she continues fighting: “Thank God I’m here another day with my babies.” Although she was still dealing with significant soreness, body aches, and pain from the procedure, she was grateful to be home and recovering with the family she has fought so hard to keep together.
The most meaningful moment came when Cindy reunited with her children after returning home. She shared that they rushed to see her, surrounding her with hugs and tears. For a family that has already endured unimaginable loss and fear, that reunion represented something powerful — a reminder that Cindy was still there, still present, and still creating the memories she had worked so hard to protect.
One moment especially captured the heart of Cindy’s journey when she shared that her youngest child, Kathryn, curled up beside her and touched her to make sure she was there. For Cindy, that simple gesture represented everything she has been fighting for. After every surgery, every difficult diagnosis, and every frightening possibility, being present for those children remains her greatest motivation.
Cindy also expressed deep gratitude to everyone who has followed her story, offered prayers, and supported her family throughout this battle. She said the messages and encouragement have been a source of strength, especially during the hardest moments when pain and nausea made it difficult to even look at them. Reading those words after surgery reminded her that she was never facing this journey alone.
Now, Cindy faces another waiting period as doctors monitor her recovery and prepare for future evaluations. Her next scans are scheduled for November, when she hopes to receive the news she has dreamed about for months: that she is cancer free. Until then, she continues holding onto faith, family, and the love that has carried her through every challenge.
