Leigh Marsh Faces Stage 4 Cancer With Remarkable Strength as Alabama Community Rallies Around Her
Leigh Marsh of Alabama faces stage 4 colon cancer with courage, faith, and strong family support as loved ones rally around her.
The communities of Pell City and Foley are rallying around Leigh Marsh, a woman whose strength, faith, and resilience have defined much of her life, yet who now faces one of her most difficult battles. At 56 years old, Leigh is confronting a devastating diagnosis that has changed her world in a matter of weeks. Even so, those who speak with her are struck by something remarkable—her voice still carries warmth, grace, and a quiet determination that refuses to surrender to fear.
Just weeks ago, Leigh’s life looked very different. She was caring for her family, managing daily responsibilities, and adjusting to a major life transition after relocating to Foley last August to care for her aging mother. At 84, her mother had suffered a serious fall, and Leigh felt compelled to move south to provide the support only a devoted daughter could offer. It was another example of the selflessness that has long defined her life—putting family first, even when the responsibility is immense.
Leigh’s life has already been shaped by profound loss and perseverance. Years ago, she met her husband Stan while attending Jacksonville State University. Their love quickly grew, and together they welcomed two children, Haylee and Austin. But their happiness was shattered when Stan died in a car accident less than five years into their marriage. At just 22 years old, Leigh became a widow, suddenly facing the impossible challenge of raising two young children alone. She never remarried, choosing instead to dedicate herself fully to her family.
Over the decades, Leigh built a life rooted in hard work and service. She spent time teaching kindergarten at First Baptist Church and later worked at ALFA Insurance. Friends and loved ones describe her as dependable, compassionate, and deeply committed to those around her. Through hardship, she continued moving forward, raising her children with strength and unwavering love.
Then, only a few weeks ago, everything changed. After experiencing concerning pain, Leigh sought medical evaluation at Baldwin Health. What doctors found was devastating. Imaging revealed a large mass on her ovaries, along with concerning spots on her lungs and liver. Further scans uncovered another mass in her colon. Soon came the diagnosis no one was prepared to hear—Stage IV colon cancer that had already spread extensively throughout her body.
Doctors determined that immediate surgery was not currently possible due to the extent of the disease. Instead, medical teams hope chemotherapy can shrink the tumors enough to make future surgery an option. Leigh recently completed her first chemotherapy session at Southern Cancer Center, spending five exhausting hours receiving treatment. The physical toll is only beginning, but emotionally she is still processing how quickly life changed—from routine normalcy to life-altering uncertainty in less than a month.
There is painful irony in Leigh’s diagnosis. For years, she played an active role in Birmingham’s Rumpshaker 5K, an event dedicated to colon cancer awareness and research. Now she finds herself facing the very disease she once helped raise awareness for. Yet even in this cruel twist, her spirit remains grounded in faith and hope, though she knows the road ahead will test every ounce of her strength.
As Leigh prepares for the difficult months ahead, she is not facing them alone. Her daughter Haylee recently moved to Foley and is now helping care for both Leigh and her elderly mother. That support has become an invaluable source of comfort. Though the future remains uncertain, Leigh Marsh’s story is already one of extraordinary endurance. She has survived heartbreaking loss, carried heavy burdens, and continued choosing love and responsibility over despair. Now, family, friends, and the wider Alabama community are lifting her in prayer, hoping strength, healing, and peace will surround her every step of the journey ahead.
