Authorities are investigating a deadly shooting on the north side of Indianapolis that left one woman dead and two others injured in the early morning darkness, sending shock and grief through the 4000 block of Park Avenue and prompting a full homicide investigation by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. The violent incident has left a neighborhood on edge and a family mourning a life taken far too soon.

Brittany Grundy Dead

According to IMPD, officers were dispatched just before 1:00 a.m. Sunday to multiple urgent 911 reports of gunfire in the residential area near 40th Street. When officers arrived on scene within minutes, they found a chaotic and emotional scene with people gathered in the street and located a woman suffering from at least one apparent gunshot wound lying near the sidewalk. Officers immediately began rendering aid until medics arrived.

The victim has been formally identified as Brittany Grundy. Emergency medical personnel provided immediate advanced trauma care at the scene, working to stabilize her, before she was rushed by ambulance under emergency conditions to a local Level I trauma hospital for emergency surgery and critical care. Despite the rapid response and the exhaustive life-saving efforts of doctors and nurses, she later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Police also confirmed that two additional individuals, whose names, ages, and genders have not yet been publicly released, were injured in the same violent incident. Both victims were transported separately to area hospitals where they were able to receive prompt medical treatment. Officials have not released further details regarding their current conditions, whether they are stable or critical, or what their exact relationship to Brittany Grundy may have been.

Preliminary findings from detectives and crime scene technicians suggest the shooting may have followed a verbal disturbance, argument, or physical altercation that escalated just prior to the gunfire erupting. Investigators currently believe the incident was targeted and not a random act of violence, but they have not yet confirmed a definitive motive, nor have they publicly stated whether the victims and the shooter or shooters knew each other beforehand.

Detectives with IMPD's Homicide Unit and Aggravated Assault Unit are continuing an intensive investigation, working to collect and catalog evidence, process the large and complex crime scene for shell casings, ballistic evidence, and DNA, canvass the neighborhood for home surveillance and doorbell camera video, and conduct in-depth interviews with multiple witnesses who were present in the moments before and after the shooting as they work to determine exactly what occurred.

No suspects have been publicly identified by name, photograph, or detailed physical description, and no arrests have been made at this time as the investigation remains extremely active and fluid. Police have increased patrols in the area and are asking anyone with information, cell phone video, or who may have overheard the initial disturbance to contact IMPD homicide detectives directly or to call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana anonymously at 317-262-TIPS.

Brittany Grundy's tragic passing has left those who knew and loved her grappling with a profound, sudden, and senseless sense of loss that has rippled through her circle of friends and family. She is being remembered by loved ones as a vibrant life gone far too soon, a daughter, friend, and community member whose future was stolen in an instant of violence.
