In Saratoga Springs, Utah, authorities have issued an AMBER Alert and launched an international search for two young brothers after investigators say their father allegedly abducted them during a custody exchange and fled the United States, triggering a cross-border investigation now focused on locating the children and ensuring their safety.
Police identified the missing children as 22-month-old Will Richman and 10-month-old Wesley Richman. According to the Saratoga Springs Police Department, the children were last seen after a scheduled visitation with their father, 46-year-old Dane Stephen Richman, who failed to return them as required under custody arrangements, prompting immediate concern and a missing children investigation.
Investigators say Richman’s disappearance appears to have been carefully planned over a period of weeks. Authorities reported signs that he had recently quit his job, faced financial difficulties, and begun selling personal belongings prior to vanishing. Officers who checked his residence described it as appearing largely emptied, raising further suspicion that he had prepared for an extended absence.
Court and investigative records also indicate that Richman missed a custody-related deposition shortly before the disappearance and sent an email to his attorney terminating her representation the same day he left. Officials say these actions are being reviewed as part of the timeline that led up to the alleged abduction.
Authorities believe Richman traveled through California before crossing into Mexico. Investigators say surveillance footage and vehicle records placed his car in the Carlsbad area near the U.S.-Mexico border on May 18, while cellphone data later placed him close to the border before activity reportedly ceased inside the United States. His vehicle is believed to be a black Toyota Camry with Utah license plate A561HL.
Family members told investigators that Richman has experience living “off the grid” and may have access to tools such as a satellite phone, increasing concern that he could attempt to avoid detection for an extended period. Officials say this has complicated search efforts and heightened urgency in the international response.
Law enforcement agencies in the United States and Mexico are now coordinating efforts as AMBER Alerts extend across borders in hopes of locating the children. Authorities emphasize that the focus remains on the safe recovery of Will and Wesley, who are both described as having blonde hair and blue eyes, and are believed to be traveling with their father.
The boys’ mother has publicly pleaded for their safe return, urging cooperation and emphasizing concern for their wellbeing. Law enforcement officials have stated that anyone with information, no matter how small, should contact emergency services immediately as the search continues across multiple jurisdictions and the investigation remains active and ongoing.
