Authorities in Hamilton County, Ohio are investigating a fatal shooting on Interstate 71 that claimed the life of 22-year-old Robert Lee Rothwell III after gunfire struck a moving vehicle during a northbound drive through Cincinnati on Thursday evening, officials said.

Robert Lee Rothwell III Killed in Highway

The incident occurred along the northbound lanes of I-71, where investigators said three people were traveling inside a vehicle when shots were fired from another car, striking the passenger area and causing panic on the roadway before the vehicle came to a stop and emergency calls were placed to law enforcement.

Deputies with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office said they responded to reports of gunfire on the interstate and found the targeted vehicle carrying Rothwell and two other occupants, all of whom were rushed for medical treatment after the shooting, with the victim suffering critical injuries that later proved fatal.

Emergency medical personnel transported Rothwell to UC Medical Center following the shooting, where doctors attempted lifesaving measures, but he was later pronounced deceased due to the severity of the gunshot wound, according to officials familiar with the case.

Authorities said the shooting prompted a major response and led to a temporary shutdown of northbound lanes on Interstate 71 in Cincinnati, causing significant traffic delays as investigators worked to secure the scene and collect evidence from the roadway during the evening hours.

Investigators have not yet released a motive in the case and said it remains unclear how many individuals may have been involved in the suspect vehicle. Detectives are continuing to analyze surveillance, ballistic evidence, and witness statements as part of the ongoing homicide investigation.

Rothwell, 22, was identified by the Hamilton County Coroner after emergency notification of family members. Loved ones are now mourning his sudden death as the investigation continues, describing him as a young man whose life was cut short unexpectedly in a violent incident on the interstate.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the Interstate 71 shooting to contact the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office as detectives continue gathering evidence in hopes of identifying additional witnesses who may have seen the suspect vehicle or the moments leading up to the deadly encounter on the busy highway corridor in Cincinnati. The investigation remains active as law enforcement agencies work through forensic analysis, reviewing roadway cameras, ballistic reports, and possible electronic data to reconstruct the timeline of events surrounding the shooting that left a young passenger dead and others shaken by the sudden violence. Officials emphasized that interstate shootings pose serious public safety concerns due to the high-speed nature of travel and the difficulty in identifying suspects in real time during fast-moving incidents.

Community members are also being asked to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity that may assist investigators in building a clearer understanding of what led to the fatal shooting. Authorities said updates will be released as new information becomes available through official channels as the case progresses through the early stages of the investigation process in Cincinnati and surrounding areas as detectives continue working.
