Rob Riden, 56, Ejected and Killed in Motorcycle Crash on Curved Stretch of Lighthouse Road in Selbyville
Rob Riden, 56, of Frankford, Delaware died in a motorcycle crash on Lighthouse Road in Selbyville after failing to navigate a curve and striking a bar
Authorities in Sussex County, Delaware are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that claimed the life of a Frankford man early Wednesday morning after his bike left the roadway and struck a roadside barrier in Selbyville, officials said.
The crash happened around 1:20 a.m. on May 20, 2026, along Lighthouse Road near Fenwick Shoals Boulevard. Delaware State Police said 56-year-old Rob Riden was traveling eastbound on a Harley-Davidson Road King when he failed to navigate a curve for reasons that remain under investigation.
Investigators said the motorcycle continued out of its lane and struck a roadside safety barrier, causing Riden to be ejected from the bike upon impact. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene shortly after the crash was reported, but he was pronounced dead due to the severity of his injuries.
Police confirmed that Riden was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, a factor investigators often review in motorcycle fatalities as part of their overall assessment of injury severity and crash dynamics. Officials said the roadway was temporarily closed while troopers documented the scene and collected evidence.
Delaware State Police said the Collision Reconstruction Unit from Troop 7 is leading the investigation. Detectives are examining roadway conditions, the motorcycle’s path of travel, and physical evidence from the scene to determine what caused the rider to lose control while entering the curve.
Authorities have not yet indicated whether speed, impairment, or environmental conditions played a role in the crash. Those factors are typically reviewed in detail during reconstruction analysis, which can take time as investigators gather and compare multiple forms of evidence.
Riden, a resident of Frankford, was identified after next of kin were notified. Friends and community members are mourning his sudden passing as officials continue working to piece together the final moments leading up to the crash.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant information to contact Delaware State Police Troop 7 at 302-703-3266 as the investigation remains ongoing.
