Authorities in Mansfield, Ohio, are investigating the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old woman who was struck by gunfire that was fired through the window of an apartment, in what police believe may have been a targeted attack.
The victim was identified as Le’ondra Messner, who was pronounced dead after being rushed to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital following the incident. According to the Mansfield Police Department, officers were called to an apartment on West Third Street around 10:38 p.m. on May 20, 2026, after reports of shots fired inside the residence.
When officers arrived, they found Messner suffering from gunshot wounds inside the apartment. Emergency responders transported her to the hospital, but she later died from her injuries, officials confirmed.
Mansfield Police Chief Jason Bammann said preliminary findings indicate the shots were fired from outside the building, passing through a window and striking Messner shortly after she arrived at the apartment. Investigators believe she had only been inside for a brief time before the shooting began.
Authorities described the situation as potentially intentional, noting that the bullets appeared to have been directed toward her location inside the apartment. Investigators are now working to determine whether the suspect followed her to the residence or was already waiting nearby before she arrived.
Police said Messner had been visiting a friend at the apartment when the shooting occurred. Chief Bammann stated that she was familiar with the location and had visited it previously, which is one of the factors being examined as detectives piece together the timeline of events.
At this stage of the investigation, officials have interviewed several persons of interest but have not announced any arrests or formal charges. Police emphasized that the case remains active and that early investigative leads are still being developed.
Authorities have not disclosed how many shots were fired or how many times Messner was struck, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. Detectives continue to collect evidence from the scene and review witness statements in an effort to identify who was responsible.
The Mansfield Police Department is asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact Detective Sergeant Jered Kingsborough as the investigation continues. Community members have expressed shock over the violence, as investigators work to determine what led to the fatal shooting that claimed the life of a young woman inside a residential apartment.
