Authorities in Fort Wayne, Indiana, are investigating a case that began as a dispute inside a Tim Hortons coffee shop and ended in the death of a 75-year-old woman, raising questions about how a brief confrontation escalated and what ultimately led to her collapse shortly afterward.
According to police, the incident occurred on May 13 shortly after 8 a.m. when Anita Grayson entered the Tim Hortons and confronted staff over an issue with her drive-thru order. Investigators say she appeared visibly upset and directed her frustration toward a 17-year-old employee while other customers and staff were present in the store.
Fort Wayne Police stated that a 20-year-old shift manager stepped in after the situation intensified, asking Grayson to leave the premises. Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators reportedly shows verbal exchanges escalating quickly, followed by physical contact between Grayson and the manager after the confrontation moved closer to the service area.
Authorities said the interaction turned physical when Grayson allegedly struck the manager after being told to leave, prompting a struggle between the two women. Police reports describe a brief but intense altercation in which both individuals fell to the ground as employees attempted to separate them and regain control of the situation.
Investigators noted that during the struggle, Grayson allegedly grabbed the manager’s hair and held on despite repeated attempts by other staff members to intervene. Employees eventually managed to break up the confrontation and return the store to a controlled environment, after which Grayson reportedly sat down inside the restaurant.
Police said that approximately 10 minutes after the incident ended, Grayson became unresponsive while still inside the coffee shop. Emergency responders were called to the scene immediately, and paramedics attempted lifesaving measures before transporting her to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The Allen County Coroner’s Office conducted an initial examination and reported no significant contributory traumatic injuries from the altercation, though the official cause of death has not yet been determined. Authorities have emphasized that the medical findings are preliminary and further analysis will be required to establish a final conclusion.
Fort Wayne Police released surveillance footage from the incident, stating that partial clips circulating online had created what they described as a misleading narrative of the events. Officials said the full recording provides necessary context for the timeline of the confrontation and the moments leading up to Grayson’s collapse.
Grayson’s family has stated that she had known medical conditions, including congestive heart failure, and had recently been using a heart monitor. Her daughter expressed shock over the incident and questioned how a dispute inside a coffee shop could coincide with a sudden medical emergency that resulted in her death.
Authorities continue to review all evidence, including video footage, witness statements, and medical records, as they work to determine the exact sequence of events. Officials have not announced any criminal charges, and the case remains under investigation while the coroner’s final report is pending.
