Indiana Deputy Jon Samuelson Critically Injured After Shooting Inside Michigan City Hospital Emergency Room

 A La Porte County sheriff’s deputy remains in critical condition after being shot inside the emergency room of a Northwest Indiana hospital Friday morning during what authorities described as an isolated incident that quickly escalated into violence inside the medical facility.

Indiana State Police identified the injured deputy as 33-year-old Jon Samuelson, a 12-year veteran of the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office and an experienced K-9 handler known throughout the department for his years of service and commitment to the community.

According to investigators, the situation began earlier in the day when Deputy Samuelson stopped to assist the driver of a disabled vehicle along State Road 2 near Westville. Authorities said the driver requested transportation to Franciscan Health Michigan City, and Samuelson agreed to help by bringing him to the hospital for assistance.

Police later discovered that the man was allegedly connected to an overnight criminal incident, prompting Samuelson to return to the hospital emergency department to speak with him further. During that interaction, investigators say a physical struggle broke out between the deputy and the suspect inside the emergency room area.

Authorities reported that during the confrontation, the suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking Deputy Samuelson three times. Medical personnel inside the hospital immediately responded to the emergency while law enforcement officers secured the area and began searching for the suspect.

Samuelson was initially treated at Franciscan Health before being airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for advanced medical care. Officials confirmed Friday that he remained in critical condition as fellow officers, hospital staff, and community members expressed support for his recovery and praised the rapid emergency response that followed the shooting.

Investigators later identified the suspect as 22-year-old Sharod Grafton Jr. of Chicago. Authorities said he fled the hospital area following the shooting but was later located and taken into custody in nearby wooded terrain. Law enforcement also recovered a handgun believed to have been used during the incident.

Officials emphasized that no other patients, hospital employees, or visitors were injured during the shooting, and investigators described the attack as an isolated event with no ongoing threat to the public. Hospital operations were temporarily affected as officers secured the emergency department and conducted evidence collection throughout the morning hours.

The shooting has deeply impacted the La Porte County law enforcement community, where Deputy Samuelson is widely respected for his years of public service.
