Georgia Woman Chatanna Patterson Dies as Authorities Say Fre’shun White Crashed Into Grant Park Shell Station
Chatanna Patterson was killed after authorities say Fre’shun White fled Georgia State Patrol and crashed into an Atlanta gas station parking lot
A devastating crash near Grant Park in Atlanta has left one woman dead and several others seriously injured after authorities say a speeding driver fleeing from Georgia State Patrol lost control and crashed into a gas station parking lot Monday afternoon. Investigators identified the victim as 51-year-old Chatanna Ohiyesha Patterson, whose death has shaken the local community as officials continue piecing together the violent sequence of events that unfolded near Interstate 20.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the incident began shortly before 2:40 p.m. when a trooper attempted to stop a Hyundai Elantra traveling approximately 90 miles per hour in a 55-mile-per-hour zone on Interstate 20 westbound in Fulton County. Authorities say the driver, identified as 26-year-old Fre’shun Tyai White of Marietta, initially slowed before accelerating and weaving aggressively through traffic.
Investigators stated that the Hyundai exited onto Boulevard before suddenly merging back onto Interstate 20, nearly causing another collision in the process. Troopers reportedly discontinued the immediate pursuit because of public safety concerns, but another trooper nearby later observed the vehicle continuing to travel recklessly through the area near the Hill Street exit.
Before officers could intercept the Hyundai, authorities say the vehicle exited onto the Hill Street ramp at a high rate of speed. Investigators believe White then lost control, crossed through Hill Street, and crashed into the parking lot of Shell near the gas pumps, creating a chaotic and deadly scene within seconds.
Witnesses and surveillance footage reportedly showed the Hyundai becoming airborne before crashing into a parked vehicle near the pumps. Authorities said Chatanna Patterson had been standing beside that parked vehicle speaking with its driver when she was struck during the collision. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Patterson was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of her injuries.
Officials confirmed that the driver of the parked vehicle, Fre’shun White, and a passenger riding inside the Hyundai all sustained serious injuries and were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. Their current medical conditions have not been publicly detailed as investigators continue reviewing the crash.
The Georgia State Patrol said White is expected to face multiple charges related to the incident. Investigators are continuing to examine surveillance footage, roadway evidence, and witness statements as they work to reconstruct the events leading up to the fatal collision and determine the full scope of criminal charges that may be filed.
The death of Chatanna Patterson has deeply impacted family members and residents in the Atlanta area, many of whom are mourning a life lost during a tragic and sudden act of reckless driving. Authorities continue urging motorists to prioritize safety and responsibility on the road, emphasizing how dangerous high-speed driving and aggressive maneuvers can place innocent lives at risk in an instant.
