Hero Lost Too Soon: EMT Seth Hodgkins Dies

According to authorities, the crash occurred just before 7:30 p.m. Hodgkins was traveling north on Route 85 when he collided with a southbound 2012 Toyota RAV4 driven by 23-year-old Seth Thayer of Raymond, which was turning left onto Tarkiln Hill Road. Following the initial impact, Hodgkins was ejected from his motorcycle and struck by a second vehicle, a 2015 GMC Terrain driven by 55-year-old Christopher Akers of Casco. Despite wearing a helmet and prompt emergency response, Hodgkins was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor, and the investigation remains ongoing with support from the Windham Police Department’s crash reconstruction team.

Hodgkins was more than a motorcyclist—he was a dedicated EMT with the Buckfield Fire Rescue Department, known for his commitment to helping others. In a Facebook post, Chief Blaquiere paid tribute: “Seth was tragically taken from us far too soon, leaving behind a department, family, and community who will deeply feel his absence. He was more than just an EMT—he was a friend, a co-worker, and someone who answered the call to help others without hesitation. His commitment to serving his community and caring for those in need will never be forgotten.”

Family, friends, and colleagues have expressed shock at the suddenness of the tragedy. Messages and tributes have poured in online, reflecting on Hodgkins’ selflessness, warmth, and dedication to his community. His role as an EMT meant he often put others’ needs first, and his loss resonates not only with loved ones but also with the countless residents he helped during his service.

Emergency responders at the scene worked swiftly, and local authorities continue to reconstruct the events leading up to the crash to ensure all factors are fully understood. Investigators are reviewing vehicle positions, traffic patterns, and road conditions to provide a complete account of the fatal incident.

Seth’s passing has left an indelible void in the Buckfield Fire Rescue Department and Maine Health EMS – Stephens (PACE). Chief Blaquiere added, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Seth’s family, friends, and all his co-workers during this incredibly difficult time. Rest easy, Seth. We’ll take it from here.”

The tragedy has also sparked conversations within the community about road safety and awareness, especially regarding interactions between motorcycles and larger vehicles. While the investigation continues, residents are urged to exercise caution and respect traffic regulations to prevent similar devastating incidents.

In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, the Cumberland County community has rallied to support Seth’s family and co-workers. Vigils, memorials, and public tributes are expected as friends and residents come together to honor his life, celebrate his contributions, and remember a young man whose dedication and compassion left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
