A tragic police chase in Northern California ended in a deadly crash early Tuesday morning near Travis Air Force Base, claiming the lives of two men.

Deadly Night in Solano County

Authorities identified the victims as 28-year-old John Earl Newton III of Sacramento, the driver, and 30-year-old Taevion Knox of Oroville, the front-seat passenger. The Solano County Coroner’s Office confirmed both men died at the scene.

The incident began shortly after midnight when Napa County deputies attempted to stop a Mercedes on Highway 12 near Highway 29 in Napa. The driver fled, leading deputies on a high-speed pursuit into Solano County, reportedly reaching speeds of up to 120 mph.

Around 12:17 a.m., the vehicle crashed near the visitor parking lot at the main gate of Travis Air Force Base and was quickly engulfed in flames. Deputies attempted to extinguish the fire but were unable to reach the occupants. Fire crews arriving at the scene pronounced both men deceased.

The Solano County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the crash, including the circumstances that prompted the initial traffic stop and the events leading up to the deadly collision.

Neighbors and local officials expressed shock at the violent end to the pursuit and emphasized the dangers of high-speed chases in populated areas.
