A tragic crash on Interstate 95 in Harnett County has claimed the life of Howard Douglas Winstead, 67, a respected and influential figure in the Carolina Beach Music scene, leaving fans, fellow musicians, and the wider community in deep mourning after news of his sudden passing early Saturday morning.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 2:06 a.m. on I-95 northbound near the Exit 73 area. Investigators said Winstead was driving a 2019 Chrysler van when it collided with the rear of a Peterbilt tractor-trailer carrying gasoline, resulting in a devastating impact in the far-left lane of the interstate.

Authorities confirmed that emergency responders with Dunn Emergency Services arrived at the scene and found Winstead trapped inside the vehicle. Despite immediate rescue efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of the crash.
