Three Dead, 14 Injured in Austin Bar District Shooting; Federal Agents Investigate Motive
Ndiaga Diagne identified as suspect in Austin mass shooting outside Buford’s bar; FBI joins probe as 3 die and 14 are wounded.
Authorities have identified Ndiaga Diagne, a 53-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Senegal, as the suspected gunman in a deadly mass shooting outside a popular downtown Austin bar early Sunday. The violence erupted just before 2 a.m. along one of the city’s busiest nightlife corridors, leaving three people dead — including the suspect — and at least 14 others wounded.
The gunfire broke out outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden on West Sixth Street, a stretch lined with bars and live music venues just a few miles from the University of Texas campus. According to the Austin Police Department, the suspect drove a large SUV past the bar multiple times before stopping, activating the vehicle’s hazard lights, and opening fire with a pistol at patrons gathered on the patio and sidewalk.
Responding officers confronted Diagne within minutes and fatally shot him at the scene, bringing the attack to an end. Two victims died shortly after the shooting, and at least 14 others were transported to area hospitals. Several were reported to be in critical condition as emergency crews worked through the early morning hours to stabilize the injured.
The scale of the crime scene stretched across blocks of the entertainment district, forcing road closures and drawing a heavy law enforcement presence. Witnesses described chaos and confusion as people fled for cover amid the sound of gunshots. Investigators spent hours collecting shell casings, reviewing surveillance footage, and interviewing those who were present when the violence unfolded.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has joined local authorities in the investigation. Alex Doran, acting special agent in charge of the bureau’s San Antonio office, said agents are reviewing “indicators” suggesting a possible nexus to terrorism based on items recovered from the suspect and his vehicle. However, officials emphasized it is still too early to determine motive, and no definitive conclusions have been announced.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis called the shooting a “tragic, tragic incident,” underscoring the coordinated effort between city, state, and federal agencies. Authorities have stated there are no additional suspects and no ongoing threat to the public, though the investigation remains active.
Community members gathered later in the day near West Sixth Street to reflect and offer support to the victims and their families. The entertainment district, known for its vibrant atmosphere, now stands as the site of one of the city’s most shocking acts of violence in recent memory.
As investigators continue to piece together what led to the deadly rampage, Austin remains focused on healing and accountability. The coming days are expected to bring further updates as authorities analyze evidence, review digital records, and seek answers about what motivated the suspect to carry out the attack.
