The Palestine, Texas community is mourning the loss of Elizabeth Paukstis, a 52-year-old attorney from Washington, D.C., who was fatally struck by a UPS truck Wednesday while crossing S. Loop 256.

Paukstis had been in East Texas assisting inmates at the TDCJ Tennessee Colony Unit as part of the Wrongful Conviction Project, advocating for individuals affected by wrongful convictions. According to Palestine Police, witness statements and evidence indicate that the UPS truck, traveling west on the roadway, struck Paukstis as she attempted to cross near an intersection. The driver remained at the scene and fully cooperated with authorities. No charges have been filed at this time.

UPS issued a statement expressing condolences, noting, “Our thoughts are with the individual’s loved ones during this difficult time. We are cooperating fully with local authorities as they investigate what happened.”
