A San Antonio mother has been arrested after allegedly forcing her young daughter to walk 19 miles to school because she was too hungover to drive following an argument with her boyfriend. The incident unfolded Wednesday morning when the child, reportedly under 12 years old, attempted to wake her mother, Lucia Victoria Marie Cruz, 35, of Orpheus Way, who had passed out from heavy drinking the night before.
Rather than assisting her daughter, Cruz allegedly told her to make the nearly seven-hour trek to school alone. The girl began walking along State Highway 211, a busy and dangerous route, before a passing driver noticed her within the first mile. Concerned for her safety, the witness picked up the child and drove her to school, alerting school officials about the situation.
Authorities responded to the home and arrested Cruz, charging her with one count of abandoning or endangering a child in imminent danger of bodily injury, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. Court records indicate she was booked into the county jail Wednesday evening and released early Thursday after posting bond. Meanwhile, the girl has been placed with another relative.
Neighbors expressed shock over the incident, citing the highway’s heavy traffic and the inherent dangers of a young child walking alone along the route. “It’s super congested with all the traffic and stuff like that,” said neighbor James Nuells. “So having a little girl like that walk down 211 don’t make no sense.”
The sheriff’s office report detailed that the child attempted to wake her mother, who briefly stirred but refused to provide a ride, instructing the girl to walk instead before returning to sleep. Not wishing to upset her mother, the child began the journey herself, putting her life at significant risk along a busy highway bordered by brush and cacti.
Authorities have urged parents and guardians to ensure children are not left in unsafe situations and praised the vigilance of the driver who intervened, preventing a potential tragedy. Cruz now faces legal proceedings, and the case highlights the dangers of child neglect stemming from parental substance abuse.
