The DPS Bell 407 helicopter, Ranger 56, had been dispatched from Kingman to provide tactical air support during an active shooter incident in Flagstaff. A state trooper‑paramedic aboard the aircraft was also killed. DPS officials confirmed two fatalities but stated that the names of the deceased would not be officially released immediately. However, family, Marine Corps, and community sources identified the pilot as Skankey.

The crash occurred around 10 p.m. on February 4, near the Railroad Springs and West Village neighborhoods. Prior to the crash, law enforcement officers had engaged an active shooter. The suspect sustained non‑fatal gunshot wounds and was taken into custody. No other injuries were reported.

Residents in the area reported hearing gunfire around 9 p.m., followed by the sound of the helicopter crash. The Arizona Daily Sun noted that the incident left the neighborhood shaken as emergency crews rushed to the scene.

AZDPS Public Information Officer Bart Graves confirmed that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation into the crash. Officials will examine mechanical factors, flight conditions, and operational details to determine the cause.

The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office and Kingman Police Department released statements expressing deep condolences, calling the incident an “incredibly profound loss” to the community. DPS officials also acknowledged the tragedy as part of a solemn history of officers lost in the line of duty since the department’s establishment in 1969.

Skankey’s death has left a lasting impact on Kingman, where he was widely respected for his service and community involvement. Friends and colleagues remembered him as a man of faith, dedication, and generosity, whose contributions extended beyond aviation into mentoring youth and supporting law enforcement.

As the Flagstaff and Kingman communities mourn, tributes continue to highlight the sacrifice of both Skankey and the fallen trooper‑paramedic. Their commitment to protecting others, even in dangerous circumstances, reflects the courage and service that defined their lives.
