The Rhode Island community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the tragic Feb. 16 shooting at Dennis M. Lynch Arena, where violence shattered what should have been a routine high school hockey game. Amid the heartbreak, a GoFundMe campaign has raised nearly $30,000 to support the recovery of Thomas Geruso, an assistant principal at Shea High School who was critically injured in the attack.
Geruso was shot during the incident that claimed the lives of Rhonda Dorgan and her son, Aidan. Authorities said the shooter, 56-year-old Robert Dorgan — Rhonda’s ex-husband, who also went by Roberta Esposito — targeted individuals connected to his former spouse before ultimately taking his own life. The chaotic scene unfolded in front of players, parents, and spectators, sending families scrambling for safety as bystanders courageously intervened to subdue the gunman.
Thomas Geruso, described by loved ones as compassionate and fiercely loyal, was among those struck by gunfire. His son, Gian Geruso, launched the fundraiser titled “Thomas Geruso’s Recovery” to help cover mounting medical expenses, including surgeries, physical therapy, and mental health support. In a heartfelt message on the campaign page, Gian wrote, “Dad is still here — and for that, I am beyond grateful,” expressing both relief and determination as his father fights to heal.
The Pawtucket School Department confirmed Geruso’s role as assistant principal at Shea High School and praised him as a compassionate educator who has served students in multiple capacities. In a public statement, the district emphasized that its focus remains on supporting Geruso, caring for staff and students, and ensuring mental health counseling resources are available during this traumatic time.
Police reported that multiple weapons, including an AR-15-style rifle, were seized from properties connected to the shooter. Video footage captured the panic inside the arena as shots rang out and people fled for cover. Quick-thinking Good Samaritans were able to restrain the gunman after he fired several rounds, potentially preventing further casualties.
As Geruso remains in critical but stable condition, the outpouring of community support reflects a shared desire for healing. The fundraiser’s rapid growth demonstrates how deeply this tragedy has resonated across Rhode Island. Even amid grief, Gian Geruso extended prayers to the Dorgan family, underscoring the complex pain surrounding the event.
The shooting has left lasting scars, but it has also highlighted resilience and unity within the community. As recovery efforts continue, supporters hope that collective compassion will help those affected begin the long path toward healing.
