Maryland Community Mourns Matthew Garcia

Authorities report that the accident occurred around 8:41 p.m. at the intersection of S. Division Street and Coulbourn Mill in Fruitland. Matthew Garcia was driving a Honda Civic when preliminary findings indicate he failed to stop at a posted stop sign before entering the intersection. The vehicle continued westbound as Garcia attempted to navigate the turn, ultimately striking the top of a guardrail and coming to rest in Coulbourn Mill Pond. Speed is believed to have been a contributing factor, though the Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading a detailed investigation in collaboration with the Fruitland Police Department.

Emergency responders acted swiftly at the scene. Garcia was airlifted by the Maryland State Police Aviation Command to a nearby trauma center in an urgent attempt to save his life, but despite extensive medical efforts, he was pronounced deceased. Two passengers were also in the vehicle: 18-year-old Andy Fon Koh of Takoma Park, Maryland, who was flown to a shock trauma center, and 18-year-old Eyuael Zewdie of Washington, D.C., who was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. While their conditions have not been publicly disclosed, friends and community members are holding hope for their recovery.

Matthew Garcia is remembered as a young man full of promise, whose life was cut far too short. Those who knew him describe him as kind, energetic, and deeply connected to his family and peers. His passing leaves a profound void for his loved ones and for the wider Wicomico County community, which continues to mourn his untimely loss.

The crash resulted in lane closures for more than four hours while investigators and emergency crews worked to process the scene. Troopers from the Maryland State Police Salisbury Barrack and officers from the Fruitland Police Department were among the first responders who provided critical assistance.

As the investigation continues, the community has rallied around the Garcia family, sharing condolences and support during this time of grief. Matthew’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved him, serving as a solemn reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with those we hold dear.

This tragic event underscores the impact of road safety, particularly for young drivers, and has prompted renewed calls for caution and awareness on Wicomico County streets. In the midst of sorrow, residents continue to honor Matthew Garcia’s memory, keeping his spirit alive through acts of remembrance and solidarity.
